Are You ‘Too Much’? Or Do You Just Have Treatable OCD That Needs the Right Help?

By Kerry Isgur, LCSW

Your brain won’t let you rest. You keep checking and double-checking, but you still feel anxious and uncertain. The reassurance seeking and cleaning routine never feels like enough to quiet the worry. Something interrupts you midway through your routine, and you have to start all over again. You feel broken. But you’re not. You’re caught in a cycle that has a name: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD. Don’t worry. There’s a way out.

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy offers a collaborative, step-by-step approach to help clients stop letting intrusive thoughts run the show. What Are The Signs of OCD?

Most people think OCD means needing things to be clean or symmetrical. But many of the clients I work with spent years convinced that something was deeply wrong with them because they experience intrusive thoughts and intense anxiety. They worry that nobody else has these experiences. Cleaning was just a way to try and find that feeling of calm again.   However, OCD is rather common and underdiagnosed.  2.3% of the population has OCD, that’s nearly 3 million people! Not only that, it’s one of the most well-understood anxiety disorders in psychology.

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) can look like:

  • Endless “what if” spirals
  • Intrusive thoughts about harm, religion, relationships, or contamination that feel completely contrary to who you are
  • Needing to confess, review, or mentally rehearse to feel safe
  • Worrying that foods contain allergens even though your doctor has told you that you don’t have allergies
  • Asking repeated questions about things like food prep safety, chemical contamination, and safety procedures
  • Double-checking your body for signs of illness
  • Avoiding places that pose a perceived threat to your safety

These compulsions may help for a little while, but soon the intrusive thoughts and feelings return. It’s an endless loop. It can be stressful and utterly exhausting.

The harder you try to push a thought away, the louder it gets. The cycle speeds up, and you find yourself spending more and more time on compulsions. You’re not broken. You’re just doing your best to get by despite how OCD keeps pulling your mind back into that loop.

Why Should I Consider a Specialized OCD Therapist?

Talking about your thoughts, exploring their roots, seeking reassurance, these feel helpful in the moment. But for OCD, they often make things worse over time. The cycle feeds on reassurance. Every compulsion, even a mental one, signals to your brain that the fear was real and worth avoiding.

ERP therapy offers a specialized, gradual approach to breaking the OCD cycle and building real tolerance for uncertainty. Find evidence-based OCD treatment in NJ or NY.

What Is Exposure And Response Prevention Therapy?

The gold-standard treatment for OCD is called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP doesn’t mean flooding yourself with fear and overwhelm. ERP helps you develop a plan to take small steps, one at a time. You will learn through experience that you can tolerate uncertainty without performing a compulsion. That your anxiety will rise and fall on its own. That you are more capable than your OCD tells you.

Together, we will build a ladder of small steps and come up with a plan to climb to the top. When you’re there, you’ll be able to take that deep breath, having discovered your capability and resiliency.  Not only that, but you’ll now have the tools to do so again next time OCD introduces another scary thought.

What To Expect From Therapy for OCD And Intrusive Thoughts With Me

We start by understanding your specific OCD. Everyone is unique. We’ll explore your triggers, the intrusive thoughts, the rituals, and compulsions (both visible and invisible). Then we build a roadmap for exposures that is collaborative, gradual, and grounded in your own values and goals. No one is thrown in the deep end.

Clients often tell me that after years of feeling controlled by their minds, ERP is the first thing that actually gave them their life back. Not because the thoughts disappear, but because they stop running the show.

If You’re in NY or NJ, You Deserve an OCD Therapist

OCD is frequently misdiagnosed and undertreated. If you’ve been in therapy before and felt like it wasn’t quite working, I get how that can feel exhausting and frustrating. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you, but perhaps the treatment approach wasn’t specialized and tailored to your needs. Specialized OCD treatment is different, and it works. With a collaborative therapist who is willing to devise a plan with you, things really can feel better.

If any of this resonated, reach out today. I’m here to talk through what you’re experiencing and if ERP is right for you.

ERP therapy provides a structured, compassionate space to finally address the cycle at its root rather than managing symptoms alone. Find OCD specialist therapy near NY and NJ.
